Joel Albrecht, left, was honored Wednesday as Tourism Person of the Year for 2014. He is shown with Tourism Committee representative Ramona Sonnenberg.
Albrecht's contributions include outreach and networking in other communities as well as personally watering city flowers on Minnesota Street in downtown New Ulm.
Albrecht was nominated for the award by Dave and Linda Weldy. The couple felt Albrecht, who served as mayor for several terms, deserved the recognition for his generosity and continued support for New Ulm. The Weldys said that Albrecht did a wonderful job of promoting tourism in New Ulm and in communities throughout the state.
Albrecht, who was surprised by the honor, said that he has a great affection for New Ulm. In fact, whenever he leaves the city he likes to take a part of the town with him, typically in the form of a Schell's Brewery sample pack, which he in turn distributes to members of neighboring communities.
For Albrecht, supporting New Ulm tourism has been its own award, saying "It's been a lot of fun."
