ST. PAUL - Seth Wiechman of Minnesota Valley Lutheran finished third in the finals of the boy's 400-meter dash on Saturday at the Minnesota state track meet at Hamline University in St. Paul.
Wiechman, a junior, ran a time of 50.18 - the best of any runner with a time in the 50s or above. Bryce Johnson of Breck, who ran a 49.79 in Friday's prelims, was beaten by Wiechman by almost one-fourth of a second.
This is the second-straight year MVL has had a placewinner on the boy's side at the state track meet. Last year, MVL took seventh in the boy's 4x200-meter relay.
Wiechman was one of two area medalists on the boy's side at this year's state meet. Dan Timm of Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop placed ninth in the shot put finals on Friday.
On the girl's side, the Sleepy Eye Unified short-distance relay team medaled in two events, having placed fifth in the 4x200-meter relay and sixth in the 4x100-meter relay in Saturday's Class A finals.
The team - comprised of Nikki Carr, Samantha Walter, Becca Schmitz and Jamie Marti for both events - qualified for Saturday's finals by placing ninth in both events to earn the final qualifying spot in each of them.
"We're happy because we were ranked ninth and we came back from that and we did better than we thought we would," Schmitz said.
The colder weather on Day 2 of the meet played somewhat of a factor in the slightly slower times compared to Friday's prelims.
"The usually helps with quicker times," Carr said.
Sleepy Eye Unified scored nine team points, which is the most since 2005 when it won the girl's 4x200 in the Class A finals for 12 team points and a 21st-place team finish.
Sibley East's Megan Eckberg placed seventh in the girl's 100-meter hurdles finals. She ran a 15.56 in the event.
