To the editor:
Korie Langbehn's letter of May 28th suggests that "Obama has a war against veterans."
Here's a refresher course - On Feb. 27 Senate Republicans blocked legislation that would have expanded federal healthcare and education programs for Veterans. Sponsored by Sen. Bernie Saunders, the Republicans (with the exception of four who voted for it) said the $24 billion bill would bust the budget. Supporters said it would have brought the most significant changes to the VA system in decades. For example it called for 27 new medical facilities to help an overstrained healthcare system. The legislation had the backing of most veteran organizations and was defeated by the Republicans because of the cost. "We couldn't afford it."
Ironically, the $24 billion that was too much to pay for our veterans, was exactly the amount of money that the Republican shutdown in October cost us.
I'm not suggesting Republicans have a war against veterans, but I certainly do question their priorities.
