GIBBON - Mello Burns Jr., 83, of Gibbon died Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Buffalo Lake Nursing Home in Buffalo Lake.

Funeral service will be 11 AM Tuesday, May 20, at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake with Pastor Rita Augsburger officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Matthews Cemetery in Fernando with full military honors being conducted by the Winthrop American Legion Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 4 7 PM Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at church on Tuesday.

Mello is survived by his wife, Mavis Burns of Gibbon; daughters, Debbie Jensen of Montevideo, Sandra Mullen of Bloomington, Kathie (Kent) Schilling of Rochester; a son, Curt (Jacqueline) Burns of Stewart; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Gullickson of Morris, Adrienne (Ralph) Maidl of New Ulm; brothers, Robert (Juli) Burns of Gaylord, Marvin (Donna) Burns of Apple Valley, Duane (Nancy) Burns of Apple Valley, Larry Burns of Maplewood, Brian Burns of New Ulm.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Margaret Welllman, Agnes Boever; brothers, James, Jon and Aaron Burns; son-in-law, Jim Mullen; sisters-in-law, Peggy Burns, Margaret Burns, Joan Burns; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Gullickson, John Boever and Roman Quandt; niece, Shannon Burns; and by a nephew, Scott Burns.

Mello Lawrence Burns Jr. was born December 14, 1930 in Lamberton to Mello Sr. and Bertha (Kronback) Burns. He attended Lamberton Public Schools. Mello served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He was united in marriage to Mavis Quandt on February 2, 1957 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm. After marriage he was employed at Kraft Foods in New Ulm, Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Washington. Mello and Mavis Started farming near Stewart in 1961. Along with farming Mello worked as a mechanic for Meehan Brothers, Boniwells, Don Blum and Wayne Hendrickson. He served on the Grafton Township Board, a Trustee at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake and as a director for the McLeod Coop Power in Glencoe.
