NEW ULM - A public hearing is scheduled at today's Planning Commission on the amendments to New Ulm's noise ordinance.
The meeting starts at 4 p.m. in city hall.
During the last year the City received complaints regarding noise and explosions associated with the recycling and shredding operation at New Ulm Steel and Recycling, 218 19th South. An evaluation found that the business violated City noise ordinance with frequencies above 400 Hertz. However, it was also determined the city noise ordinance was more strict than most Minnesota cities. The City Council chose to revise the city's noise ordinance to meet the standard used by Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. This change requires an amendment to the zoning ordinance and a public hearing by the Planning Commission.
In relation to the noise ordinance amendment, the commission will also consider an application from Josh Luneburg on behalf of New Ulm Steel and Recycling for a Conditional Use Permit to build a 12-foot high fence on the property. It had previously been approved to construct an 8-foot fence. This additional permit would allow sections of the fence to extend 12 feet in order to ensure protection from flying debris.
The commission will also consider an application submitted by James Kretsch for a Conditional Use Permit to allow an apartment building on a property zoned as a general business district at 123 S. Minnesota St. The apartment building would contain 39 units. Kretsch previously requested a CUP for an apartment building at 103-119 S. Minnesota St., which was recommended by the Planning Commission and approved by the City Council. This new request would move the proposed apartment 83 feet to the south towards 2nd South Street.
