Charles W. Sundeen

Charles W. Sundeen, age 74, of Winthrop, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the Ridgeview Sibley Medical Center in Arlington.

Memorial Service will be Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Winthrop with Pastor Bob Miner officiating.

Gathering of Family and Friends will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Charles "The Coach" Willard Sundeen was born on February 3, 1940, in Minneapolis, MN. He was the son of Clarence D. and Evangeline (Rundquist) Sundeen. Charles was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth. He was a 1958 graduate of the Kerkoven High School. Charles furthered his education at Concordia College, where he played football and hockey while earning his Bachelor's Degree. After receiving his Bachelor's Degree, he taught history and coached football for five years at Pequot Lakes High School. In 1964 and 1965, his football teams were ranked No. 1 in the state for nine-man football with unbeaten records and titles in the Longbow Conference and Section Playoffs. He then attended St. Cloud State and received his Masters in History and Physical Education in May of 1971. While attending St. Cloud State, he was a scout for the football team.

In 1971, he starting teaching and coaching football at Winthrop High School. He taught until 1994, when he retired from teaching and continued coaching until 1999. He had the opportunity to coach the 1989 state championship football team for GFW.

Charles was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He played the banjo and was an avid musician. He loved guns, the outdoors, animals, especially his dogs. Charles enjoyed sailing, trains and collecting football cards and coins.

The Coach will be missed. Blessed be his memory.

Charles is survived by his school community, church, neighbors, and many friends.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Evangeline Sundeen.
