NEW ULM - The New Ulm boy's tennis team concluded its hectic week with a 6-1 loss to Mankato East/Loyola on Friday.
Playing four meets in one week has been tiring, but it had one major benefit for the young Eagles (1-3, 0-1 South Central).
"You get to play a lot of people in a row so you get a lot of good learning experience," said junior Josh Koelpin. "We've seen some good competition, so we got to see what good tennis is like."
The Eagles' lone win was at the No. 1 doubles slot, where Nic Gartner and Noah Stocker won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Griffin Bibbs and Brendan Loayza.
At the No. 1 singles slot, Calvin Collum Jr. had the tall task of facing Mason Bultje, a returning state qualifier for the Cougars.
Bultje featured a wicked serve that caused Collum some trouble during their match.
"It was very unpredictable, he's just an amazing player though," Collum said. "It's a good chance to get out there and see how well I do against one of the better players in the state."
Despite losing 6-1, 6-2, Collum was not discouraged by the outcome of his match.
"I thought I did very well today," Collum said. "It was one of my better games for sure. But in the end, he's a good player. I'm looking forward to another chance against him if I can."
Koelpin was not nearly as satisfied with his match - a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Dominic Cannella - at the No. 2 singles slot.
"I was just hitting everything long, couldn't find my strokes, my serve wasn't quite going," Koelpin said. "Then it gets a little frustrating, but you've got to stay mentally tough."
New Ulm will have a reprieve from competition until April 17, when it hosts Waseca.
