The deadline to sign up for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act is March 31, just six days away.
We would encourage those who don't have health insurance to go through the MNsure website and sign up. Don't be scared off by the problems that beset the program during its rollout last October. The delays and freezeups have been largely eliminated.
If you feel your computer skills aren't up to the task, you can find help at New Ulm Medical Center, where certified counselors are ready to assist, or go to a local insurance broker for help.
They can help you find a program you can afford, or help those who qualify sign up for MinnesotaCare or Medicaid.
Why sign up? For your health, of course. People who have health insurance are much more likely to get preventive care like annual physicals, tests to detect common cancers at an early stage, and treatment for chronic conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, conditions that can lead to much more serious problems if they aren't controlled.
Catching and treating diseases at an early stage is much more cost-efficient than waiting until the disease becomes a serious problem, and it's better for your health.
