NEW ULM - Perry Johnson, 56, of New Ulm died Thursday, March 13, 2014 at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Timothy Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 7:30 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home SOUTH CHAPEL in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday. Perry is survived by his wife, Karen Johnson of New Ulm; sons and daughter-in-law, Ryan and Grace Johnson, Joe Johnson and his special friend, Darcy Brey all of New Ulm; sister, Amy Freidman of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; brothers, Todd Johnson and his special friend, Lilly Scharfencamp of New Ulm, Paul Johnson of Colorado; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Willard and Alice Manderfeld of New Ulm; step-daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Paul Welckle of Mankato, Rachel and Scott Melzer of La Salle; step-sons and their special friends, Nate Brand and Jade Williams of Mankato, Jon Brand and Callie Ulwelling of Nicollet; grandchildren, Cole Abraham, Dominick Wills, Landen Johnson, Brayden Welckle, Natalie Johnson, Collin Johnson, Laiken Melzer, Addison Welckle; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jenny and Rick Eckstein, Chris and Dave Goplin all of New Ulm, Bev Manderfeld of St. Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents; several aunts; and uncles.

Perry Dean Johnson was born on May 29, 1957 in Waseca to Jerry and Arlene (Lundquist) Johnson. Before he started school his family moved to Sleepy Eye where he attended school and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public Schools. After high school he attended vocational school for auto parts management. Perry worked for the 3M corporation in New Ulm for over 30 years. He married Karen Johnson (Brand) on July 27, 2002 at their home in New Ulm. In 2004, Karen and Perry built their dream home, a log home on the edge of town. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, riding on their 4 wheelers, outdoor activities, watching NASCAR and NHRA, working on various outdoor projects around their property and going to auctions. In 2011, Perry suffered a stroke and in May of 2013, it was discovered that he had cancer. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
