WINTHROP - Merlyn Pierson, age 82, of Winthrop passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, March 4, at 11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop with Pastor Kimberly Swanson-Buffie officiating. Interment will be in the Winthrop Cemetery. Military Honors by the Winthrop Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 7:30-8:30 a.m. today at the Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Merlyn John Pierson was born on November 2, 1931, in Winthrop, Minnesota. He was the son of Olaf and Inez Isackson Pierson. Merlyn was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. He received his education in Winthrop and was a 1949 graduate of the Winthrop High School.

Merlyn entered active military service on October 9, 1952, and served his country in the United States Army. He received the National Defense Service Medal. Merlyn was Honorably Discharged on October 8, 1954.

On October 28, 1956, Merlyn was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Gorr at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. After their marriage, the couple resided a short time in New Ulm before moving to the farm site that his great-grandfather built in Bernadotte Township, Nicollet County. In 1981, the couple moved to the farm where he grew up. In 1999, they moved into Winthrop. He was employed at Hands, Inc. in Winthrop in the maintenance department, retiring in 2008. The couple was blessed with five children. Merlyn and Shirley shared 51 years of marriage before Shirley passed away on October 16, 2008.

Merlyn was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop and served on the church council. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 314 in Winthrop.

Merlyn loved auctions, deer hunting, fishing and travelling. He especially loved spending time at "The Land" and time with his family. Blessed be his memory.

Merlyn is survived by his children, LeAnn Werner and her husband, Lester of Winthrop, MN, Judy Ross and her husband, Dwayne of Winthrop, MN, Kelly Pierson and his wife, Sandra of Winthrop, MN, Sandra Schlueter and her husband, Glen of Gaylord, MN, and Richard Pierson and his wife, Kelly Jean of Sanborn, MN; grandchildren, Wade Werner and his wife, Jennifer, Jarod Werner, Bethany Gangelhoff and her husband, Brian, Andrew Pierson and his wife, Sarah, Jonathan Pierson, Jason Ross, Mia Ross, Lauren Henke, Samantha Henke, Lon Henke, Collin Pierson, Jeremy Pierson, and Megan Pierson; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Lincoln Werner, and Gavin Gangelhoff; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Merlyn was preceded in death by his parents, Olaf and Inez Pierson; wife, Shirley Pierson; and sister, Phyllis (Pierson) Meyer.
