Thinking ahead

THUMBS UP: District 88 is is thinking and planning for the future with its facilities task force. The group is studying population trends, school district needs and examining the school district's buildings to see how well the facilities will be able to meet those needs in the future.

This is an important task for the district. Planning now and preparing for future needs assures that any changes that need to be made will be made efficiently and when needed.

The task force has taken a bold approach to facilities. It is examining two major potential construction projects, one to connect the current high school and Jefferson Elementary with a connecting building, creating a space for grades 8-12 in the high school and putting grades 4-7 at Jefferson, and moving the lower grades to the Washington building.

The other option would be to build a new high school at a new location.

Both are expensive, to be sure, but the studies being conducted now will help ensure that whatever the cost is, it will be money well spent.

Eagles to state

THUMBS UP: Congratulations to the New Ulm High School Girls Hockey Team, which has earned its fifth-straight trip to the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament.

The Eagles overcame Luverne 2-1 Thursday in the Section 3A tournament, and will travel to the Excel Center on Wednesday. Their opponent will be named this morning.

Good luck in the state tournament, Eagles.

Vet of the Year

THUMBS UP: Congratulations are in order, too, for Dr. Sharon Hurley of the New Ulm Regional Veterinary Center, who was recognized last weekend as Veterinarian of the Year by the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Hurley was recognized by her peers for her contributions to the profession, and to her community. Like many who receive these awards, Hurley has quietly been doing good work for her profession and in the community, and it is good to see someone like that receive the recognition they deserve.
