MANKATO - Eighth-grader Benjamin Draper, of St. Paul's Lutheran School in New Ulm, placed second at the Regional (Chapter) MATHCOUNTS Competition at Minnesota State University, Mankato, Feb. 3, according to information released by the Traverse deSioux Chapter of MATHCOUNTS on Saturday.
Draper advances to the state competition in St. Paul in March.
The top four individuals and the top four teams advance to state, according to the press release.

In all, 152 students competed in the meet for the chance to go to state.
The team from St. Paul's, comprised of Draper (second in the individual rankings), Peter Spengler (grade 7; 12th in the rankings), Isaiah Koepsell (grade 8; 16th) and Marshall Mohror (grade 7, 20th), placed fifth in the regional meet, which means the team is an alternate for the state competition.
Lucas Guo from Dakota Meadows Middle School, Mankato, placed first in the regional competition. The second, third and fourth-place individuals, respectively, were Draper; Kellen Rodriguez, of Fairmont High School; and Adam Krause, of Mankato East Junior High School.
The top team was Hutchinson Middle School. The second, third and fourth place teams were: Mankato East Junior High School, Dakota Meadows Middle School, Mankato; and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, respectively.
Other students from St. Paul's, also pictured above, participated in the regional meet as individuals. They included: Grace Peterson (grade 7; 15th in the rankings), Magdala Diersen (grade 8; 19th), Connor Schaper (grade 7; 33rd) and Stephanie Dose (grade 7; 45th).
The chapter competition is organized by the Traverse Des Sioux Chapter of the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers.
