The family moved to New Ulm in 1959 where Robert began a 34-year teaching/coaching career. He taught Latin and Phy Ed, coaching wrestling and other sports. During the 1980s he became more active in community theater performing in many productions with the Pioneer Players.

In 2000, Robert and Juanita moved back to the Twin Cities to be close to their children. He remained active his entire life and could be seen, even in his early 80s, rollerblading around Lake Harriet and in the Metrodome during the winter.
