NEW ULM - The New Ulm Medical Center celebrated the completion of its $5.3 million expansion project on Friday with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Clinic president Toby Freier said there are a few details and remodeling issues to be completed, but the new clinic entrance is open, exam rooms are ready for use, and the new pharmacy and eye clinic and optical shop are open.

"Our emphasis for the past several years has been focused on how can we grow services for New Ulm and for the region. We have been focused on improving the quality of our care for our patient, improving the experience for our patients, and being cost effective," said Freier. "We feel that with the expansion of our clinic, the addition or our eye care center and the addition of our pharmacy allows us to do that."

New Ulm Mayor Robert Beussman along with several doctors and other staff cut a ribbon during a ceremony for the New Ulm Medica Center’s expansion project Friday.

The addition has increased the existing clinic by 12,000 square feet. It includes 28 additional exam rooms, with more offices for fulltime and visiting physicians. The retail pharmacy will have a drive-up window in time.

The Eye Care Clinic, headed by Dr. Natalia Kramarevsky, incorporates the practice of Dr. Richard Dannenberg, owner of the New Ulm Eye Center and Optical, who has retired. The proximity of the clinic to the hospital surgical center will allow Dr. Kramarevsky to perform surgical procedures and then see patients without lost time for travel.

Mayor Robert Beussman, who snipped the ribbon for the ceremony, said it was a "great addition to the community."

He quipped that he had thought about contacting Gov. Mark Dayton, who is heading for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester to have some hip surgery done, and suggesting the governor come to New Ulm for the procedure.
