MPCA releases list of fines for Oct.-Dec. 2013

ST. PAUL - In an effort to promote environmental compliance, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) concluded 65 enforcement cases in 41 Minnesota counties, October through December of 2013.

Penalties in all 65 cases totaled nearly $630,000. The largest find was $248,240 for hazardous waste violations by St. Mary's Duluth Clinic Health Systems. The fine included a $233,240 supplemental environmental project.

In addition to the 65 recently completed cases, the MPCA has 141 ongoing enforcement investigations, 15 of which were opened as new cases during the fourth quarter of 2013. Not all investigations lead to fines or other official action.

Imposing fines is only part of the MPCA enforcement process. Agency staff continue to provide assistance, support and information on the steps and tools necessary to achieve compliance for any company or local government that asks for it.

Fourth quarter 2013 cases included Beemer Companies, Fairmont, $8,975, individual septic treatment systems violations; Triple J Family Farms, LLC, Buffalo Lake, $8,818, water quality violations; Daktronics, Redwood Falls, $5,825, hazardous waste violations; Palm Beach Marinecraft Inc., New Ulm, $4,300, storm water violations; Ron Trebesch, Morgan, $3,887, solid waste violations; Heartland Corn Products, Winthrop, $1,500, air quality violations; Stimpert Enterprises, Inc., Sleepy Eye, $1,275, storm water violations; Shaw Drainage, Gaylord, $750, solid waste violations.
