NEW ULM Just one day after breaking the Martin Luther College men's basketball all-time scoring record, Galen Holzhueter scored 28 points and led his Knights to a 79-73 victory over Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opponent North Central College.

Holzhueter entered Friday's game against Northwestern College needing 24 points to tie the previous record of 1,447 points which was held by Tom Engelbrecht who played from 2000-2003. Holzhueter scored 26 points in the game to claim the record.

"This is a great accomplishment for me," Holzhueter said. "I am very thankful to God for the abilities he has given me and thankful that it is over with now, and I can focus on the rest of the season."

In Saturday's action, the two teams traded baskets for the majority of the first half. No team led by more than four points before the Knights were able to put together a 10-0 run late in the first half to go up seven points. MLC took a six point lead into halftime.

The second half was a physical dogfight with both teams fighting hard to obtain the upper hand. MLC led by as much as nine in the second half, but North Central always found a way to climb back into the game.

"Everyone played hard for us today, and it showed," Holzhueter said.

North Central even managed to take a two-point lead with six points left in the game, but Holzhueter hit a 3-pointer on the next possession give the lead back to his team for good.

Made free throws by Holzhueter and Austin Eisenman along with a 3-pointer by Mike Paulsen helped put the game on ice for the Knights.

"We definitely had some guys really step up for us today, especially late," Holzhueter said.

Eisenman and Todd Brassow added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for MLC, while Luke Rothe had eight points, five steals, and seven assists.

The Knights (3-11, 2-1) will play again Friday when they travel to St. Scholastica.
