NEW ULM - Ian Kimmel, from New Ulm, won the prestigious Mandolin Player of the Year award for SPBGMA's (Society for the Preservation of the Bluegrass Music of America) 2014 Midwest Bluegrass Awards.
SPBGMA is a Missouri-based organization annually holding more than a dozen bluegrass festivals throughout the Midwest. Their 40th Annual Bluegrass Music Awards Convention was held in Jefferson City, MO on Jan. 11.
Kimmel, a 17-year-old senior at New Ulm Public High School, is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who began performing at bluegrass festivals and concerts at age 8. He plans to attend Eastern Tennessee State University where he will major in bluegrass music. His band, Barton's Hollow, won the 'Race for the Place' bluegrass band contest sponsored by MBOTMA (Minnesota Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association) in November 2013. Kimmel will perform at SPBGMA's National Awards Convention in Nashville, Tenn., on Jan. 31, with his father's band, Dick Kimmel & Co.
