SLEEPY EYE - All five starters on the Sleepy Eye girl's basketball team scored in double figures in a 64-44 rout of Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday night.

Sophomore Josie Schieffert led the Indians (8-6, 3-4 Tomahawk) with 14 points, nine rebounds and six blocks. Claire Krumbach, McKayla Ahlrich and Sarah Ibarra each had 11 points, while Justine Gonzalez had 10.

"I love how we went inside-out all night to Josie and then kicked from there," said Sleepy Eye coach Ryan Hulke. "We had five girls in double figures, which is huge for us because we've had Josie, Josie, Josie [as our leading scorer] lately and teams are obviously going to figure it out and we adjusted well."

Schieffert was outshined by Erika Zanoth's game-high 17 points for BLHS (1-7, 1-5), which tied the game three times in the first half but never led once.

"After playing last night and not playing well at all, we were much better tonight, the energy was there," said BLHS coach James Bertsch. "We played with them early, but then down the stretch in a matter of five minutes or so [the Indians] hit some shots. That was the difference."

The Mustangs' usual leading scorer, senior post Michelle Melsha, was held to nine points against Schieffert and Krumbach.

"They weren't paying attention and we kept trying to tell them the high post is open because they were behind her and they'd bring the other big down," Bertsch said. "So Josie was behind and then Krumbach would come down and double team and my guards weren't seeing it."

Sleepy Eye jumped out to a 12-3 lead, shooting 6-of-7 with three field goals from Schieffert. BLHS went on a 7-0 run to pull to within two, keeping it close and eventually tying the game at 25-25.

From there, the Indians went on a 12-0 run to close out the first half. Schieffert scored two baskets, while Krumbach tallied a three-point play and Gonzalez made a 3-pointer during that run.

"We picked up our defensive pressure a little bit," Hulke said of how his team spurred the 12-0 run. "We got in foul trouble, which we had dropped into zone ... Then I just said we've got to get this thing going up and down. That was the difference there, we just made a run."

Katie Kalenberg led the Mustangs with 10 points by halftime, but managed to score two points in the second half to finish with 12.

Eighth-grader Maddie Heiderscheidt scored five points for Sleepy Eye with a 3-for-4 stand at the free-throw line.

BLHS will play at Sleepy Eye St. Mary's on Friday, while Sleepy Eye will host Springfield on Friday. Both games will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
