NEW ULM - The New Ulm Sister Cities Commission presented its Recognition Award on Monday to a former commission member and commission chair, Terry Johnson.

Johnson served six years on the Sister Cities Commission, including a year as its chair. He continues to be a part of Commission activities and attends regular commission meetings as a "friend" of the organization.

Commission Chair Bruce Fenske said Johnson has served the commission in many ways, including organizing the Commission's brat stand fund-raiser, for which he has been the lead stand opener and closer. Johnson came up with several promotions, like music, hula hoops and "Buy ten, get one free" promotions.

Johnson has provided an antique truck for parades where the Commission was represented, and he helped decorate boats for Minnesota River flotillas.

Johnson also contributed many volunteer hours before the 2009 Hermann Celebration in New Ulm.

In accepting the award, Johnson said it is one of the most fun city commissions to serve on. He recommended it to anyone interested in New Ulm and its heritage.
