WINTHROP - Elaine Nelson, 87, of Winthrop, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014 at Johanna Shores-Presbyterian Homes in Arden Hills.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., . Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop with Pastor Paul Tessmer officiating. Burial will follow in the Winthrop Cemetery.

Visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesday at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop.

Elaine is survived by her daughters, Kay (Dale) Olson of North Oaks, Joyce (Gary) Schuette of Walker, Ruth (Jim) Bauer of Winthrop; her sons, Ken Nelson of Minneapolis, John (Cindy) Nelson of New Ulm; six grandchildren; and by her brother, Dale (Paulette) Tomaschko of Chanhassen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Virgil Nelson; and by her granddaughter, Kristin Joy Olson.

Elaine Loretta Tomaschko was born July 30, 1926 in New Ulm to Wilmer and Mayme (Wiese) Tomaschko. She attended New Ulm schools and was a 1944 graduate of New Ulm High School. Elaine was united in marriage to Virgil Nelson on Sept. 27, 1948 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. After marriage they lived in rural Winthrop. She was employed at the Winthrop School District then Skyline in New Ulm and Upper Midwest Management in New Ulm until her retirement. Elaine and Virgil enjoyed socializing in Winthrop and were involved in many community activities. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Elaine was a resident of the Johanna Shores-Presbyterian Homes in Arden Hills for the past six years. She was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop where she was very active in the Ladies Guild.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Alzheimer's Association.
