NEW ULM - New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) will host an informational session on Tuesday regarding MNsure, the new marketplace where Minnesotans can find, compare, and purchase quality health care coverage.
The meeting is free and open to the public. No registration is required. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the NUMC third floor auditorium. Speakers include MNsure Southwest Region Community Outreach Liaison Ellen De la torre and NUMC President Toby Freier. The event is being co-sponsored by the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce.
De la torre and Freier will discuss how to sign up for MNsure, including how individuals and small businesses can determine which plans are best for them. If a person does not wish to navigate the MNsure system alone, NUMC's Certified Application Counselors will also be on hand to provide assistance after the meeting, or to schedule appointments for later dates.Starting in January 2014, most adults over age 18 must have health insurance or pay a fine, as required by the Affordable Care Act. Minnesotans who currently are uninsured will have the opportunity to sign up for insurance through MNsure. The process can be confusing and it can be challenging for a person to make sure that the plan they chose fits them and their family's needs best. The objective for this MNsure informational session is to alleviate some of that confusion for area residents.
De la torre, a native of southern Minnesota, has worked extensively with the Latino population on healthcare access issues. Prior to joining MNsure, De la torre was a program coordinator for a partnership between private, non-profit and government entities, providing interpreting services and facilitating a worksite wellness program. For her work on rural healthcare issues, De la torre was appointed by Governor Dayton to the Rural Health Advisory Committee in 2011. She holds a Bachelor's degree from Minnesota State University-Mankato in Spanish and Community Health. She studied in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she later resided for six years. De la torre holds an Interpreting Certificate from the University of Minnesota-Rochester and is also certified as a Holistic Nutritional Health Coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City.
