GAYLORD - Elation overcame the Sibley East stands after Zac Weber's layup off a fastbreak directly following a turnover by Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop with 07.3 remaining.
Weber's layup served as the cherry on top of Sibley East's 47-45 win against GFW in a nonconference boy's basketball game on Tuesday night.
GFW (0-2, 0-1 Tomahawk) held a 13-point lead with 6:42 remaining in the second half, but fell apart to allow a 15-0 run by Sibley East (1-1, 0-0 Minnesota River) to erase it.
"We've got to make better decisions with the basketball," said GFW coach Richard Busse. "In the last five minutes of the game, we took shots that we shouldn't have been taking. We've got to get better in those situations; we've got to be a little more poised, make good decisions."
Weber found his groove in the second half, during which he scored eight of his 10 points for the Wolverines.
Weber helped co-captains Brody Rodning and Ben White spearhead Sibley East's comeback within the final six minutes of the game. Sibley East coach Dan Meier said this came as a relief after having struggled offensively until that point.
"The kids just finally let go of some of the stress and they unwound a little bit," Meier said. "We didn't make great shots. We made some more shots than we did, but we picked good shots - we weren't taking bad shots. We didn't turn the ball over anymore in that stretch and then [GFW] took a few shots I'm sure coach Busse didn't want them taking that gave us the extra possessions."
White found himself in foul trouble early, picking up two fouls within the first 10 minutes and another within the first five of the second half. White was played sparingly to avoid giving the Thunderbirds free shots at the line, but finished with eight points on 2-of-4 shooting and a 3-of-3 stand at the line.
"I thought he actually played very well with four fouls," Meier said of White. "He didn't play so well with three, he got his fourth off that."
Rodning finished with a team-high 13 points, netting five within the 15-0 run that closed the game.
Seth Schuette and Jack Bussler combined for 31 of GFW's 45 points, while Dan Timm and Alex Howe contributed for four points apiece.
Sibley East returns to action next Tuesday, when it plays at Howard Lake-Winsted-Waverly. GFW hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran next Tuesday. Both games are set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
"We're going to get better handling the last five minutes of a ballgame," Busse said. "It's week No. 3 of the season, so we have a lot of time to get into midseason form."
