NEW ULM - The New Ulm Human Rights Commmission is inviting area students to participate in the NUHRC 2014 poster and essay contests.
The contests put the spotlight on the topic:
Prejudice and stereotypes affect the way we perceive and interact with each other, even when we don't realize it. How do stereotypes affect our society and how do they damage human rights?
This year, the 2014 NUHRC annual essay is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graded students.Essays may be from one to three pages in length, and should Reference the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United States Constitution, the United States Bill of Rights or the Minnesota Human Rights Act.
The deadline for essay entries is Jan. 15, 2014. Prizes are $100, $ 75, and $ 50 for the top three finalists.
The first place essay will be entered in the Minnesota League of Human Rights Commissions state essay contest. Awards for the winners of the League's essay contest are: $500 for First prize, $350 for Second prize and $200 for Third prize. These prizes will be awarded in the spring.
The poster contest is open to all grades from Kindergarten to 12th grade.
The poster can be in any medium, but no larger than 20" x 30". Reference the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United States Constitution, the United States Bill of Rights or the Minnesota Human Rights Act.

A completed entry form should be attached to the back of the submitted poster and or essay. Entry forms are available from participating school offices or City Hall. Both contests are open to home-schooled students as well.
