FRANKLIN - Martha A. Helget, 92, of Franklin and formerly of New Ulm died Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at the Redwood Area Hospital in Redwood Falls.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 18, 2013 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Monsignor John A. Richter celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Eppard; grandchildren, Reva Weber, Jordan Martinka, Danika Eppard, Judah Eppard, Lydia Eppard; great grandson, Payton Eppard; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lauretta and Charles Holm, Alice and Willard Manderfeld; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Sperl, Bernice Sperl, Sharon Sperl; nieces; and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter Helget; daughter, Sharon Martinka; sister, Ida Janni; and brothers, Edmund, Felix, Walter, Richard, and Robert Sperl.
Martha Angela Sperl was born on July 27, 1921 in Albin Township, Brown County to John and Bertha (Hauser) Sperl. On May 14, 1946 she was united in marriage to Walter Helget at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. In 1948 they moved to Franklin and owned and operated Walt's Caf until 1987. They downsized the restaurant to start a family of their own and in 1967 adopted Sharon Ann and in 1970 adopted Rhonda Kay. Martha closed the restaurant and worked as a cook at the nursing home in Franklin. She was currently a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Franklin. Martha will be remembered by many for her ability to plant a seed and nurture it into a thriving plant.
