Cardinals crush New Ulm

October 17, 2013
Jake Calhoun , The Journal

NEW ULM - Mistakes riddled New Ulm's regular-season finale, a 42-0 loss to Fairmont on a chilly Wednesday night.

The Eagles (0-8, 0-5 SCC) committed four turnovers overall - two interceptions by quarterback Nate Glaubitz and a fumble by Bryan Dewanz in the first quarter and Cooper Forbrook in the third - negating every chance to score on the night.

"The mistakes hurt and those are things we talk about and try to fix," said New Ulm coach Tony Ortmann. "The second half, we were able to move the football with our offense, but we just didn't finish drives."

New Ulm has not beaten Fairmont since 2004.

For the Cardinals (6-2, 4-1), quarterback Spencer Chirpich threw four touchdowns on 8-for-9 passing and 156 yards in the first half. Chirpich and the rest of the Fairmont starters sat the second half after gaining a 42-0 lead by halftime.

Josh Eversman caught two of those touchdown passes, with four total receptions and 99 yards. Jay Ruen and Cole Emler each had a touchdown reception as well.

Chris Fausch and Derek Edman each scored a rushing touchdown for the Cardinals. Edman's was from 17 yards out midway through the second quarter, while Fausch's came after he broke through four New Ulm arm-tackles in a 35-yard rampage to the end zone.

For New Ulm, Glaubitz finished 6-for-15 passing for 47 yards and two interceptions. Matt Rowley led the Eagles in rushing with 23 yards off six carries, while Dewanz had 20 yards off eight carries and one lost fumble.

"We have to keep fixing our mistakes," Ortmann said. "We have young guys on the field and we have to stay positive with our kids. They're learning and that's the biggest thing. We have to keep building their confidence so that they know they can do it."
