NEW?ULM - The New Ulm community is on a weight loss roll, and staff and volunteers from Hearts Beat Back: The Heart of New Ulm Project (HONU) are hoping to increase the momentum.
To date, more than 1,600 adults who live or work in New Ulm have registered for the free LOSE IT to WIN IT Community Health Challenge and lost a collective 2,042 pounds.
As the registration period enters its final four weeks, HONU is pushing hard for 900 more people to register in order to reach the goal of 2,500.
Tom Schmitz, director of New Ulm Parks and Recreation, shows off a sample piece of outdoor fitness equipment available for community members to try out in the lobby of the Recreation Center.
Cindy Winters, community programs and public policy specialist for HONU, said, "Registering is quick and easy - it only takes a few minutes. Just by registering online and doing their first weigh-in at one of the three kiosks around town, a person helps earn $10 to be donated toward the community prize. Tracking their points online is completely optional. Participation can be as easy as registering and then just weighing in three more times over the course of 12 months."
Winters also stressed that even if people don't need to lose weight, they can still participate to maintain their weight and earn dollars that will be contributed toward the community prize. Everyone who registers for the challenge during the month of October will be entered into a drawing to win a free iPad.
Once the challenge has 2, 500 people registered, HONU will make a $25,000 donation toward the community prize of $100,000 worth of new outdoor fitness equipment for New Ulm parks and bicycle improvements such as bicycle racks, bicycle lanes and signage.
Online registration is open through Oct. 31 at www.heartsbeatback.org/loseit. Public kiosks for the weigh-in portion are located at Hy-Vee, New Ulm Recreation Center and New Ulm Medical Center.
