NEW ULM - The New Ulm Public Utilities Commission discussed Tuesday three projects related to building a new water tower in Nehls Park.
The Nehls Park water tower, which is currently under construction, does not have an exact date for completion. Because the final step of applying a protective paint is variable depending on the air temperature and weather, it most likely will be completed in summer 2014. The entire project has a required completion date of Aug. 1, 2014.
The Hermann Heights water tower, which is being replaced with the Nehls Park water tower, and its accompanying booster station will not be demolished until the Nehls tower is completed. The earliest demolition date will be fall 2014.
A consultant to the PUC suggested waiting until Nehls Park water tower's one-year warranty expires before demolishing Hermann Heights equipment. If approved, Hermann Heights water tower demolition would take place in fall 2015.
The Hermann Heights area water mains have approximately 640 feet that could be expanded from a 6-inch main to a 12-inch main. The expansion is the final portion of water main running from the golf course and Nehls Park to Hermann Heights Park. The expansion will allow the Nehls Park area to be connected to the New Ulm Municipal Airport water tower. The project will likely be completed in 2014.
