Don’t minimize terrorist threats

August 7, 2013

The decision to close U.S. diplomatic outposts in 19 cities in the Middle East and elsewhere in Muslim areas, was "not an indication of a new threat" from Islamic terrorists, a State Department spokeswoman insisted Sunday. She maintained it was only because of "an abundance of caution."

That is not true, of course. Intelligence sources have confirmed there have been indications of plans by terrorist organizations for attacks on U.S. facilities.

Remember the few years leading up to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on America? Government officials minimized the threat of terrorism then, too.

Refusing to admit that al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations are making a comeback amounts to whistling past the graveyard in which they hope to bury us. It also gives Americans misplaced faith in an anti-terrorism strategy that clearly is not working.
