Error in 10th inning costs Sleepy Eye in pitcher’s duel

LAMBERTON - The Sleepy Eye amateur baseball team took a tough 1-0 loss in 10 innings to Lamberton in the first game of the Region 2C playoffs on Saturday afternoon.

Andrew Woitas took the loss for the Indians, allowing six hits and one unearned run in his 9 2/3 innings of the pitcher's duel. Johnny Pistuka got the win in the duel, allowing four hits while striking out 13 batters and walking two on the mound for Lamberton.

A throwing error by Sleepy Eye shortstop Sean Mathiowetz in an effort to get Donald Strand out for the third out of the inning sailed past the first baseman, allowing Seth Guetter to come in from third base for the sole run of the game. Mathiowetz's error was the only one between both teams in the game.

Scott Salfer was the first player to reach base for the Indians, getting on after knocking a single up the middle in the top of the third. However, the Indians' scoring chance was stifled after Salfer was thrown out on a 4-6 fielder's choice for the second out of the inning, which was immediately followed by a flyout to center field by Joey Walter.

Jake Bohnen notched a two-out double to left-center field in the fourth, but was immediately followed by a 5-3 putout of Alan Woitas. Bohnen led the Indians in hitting with a 2-for-4 stand at the plate.

The Longsox got two on base in the second and also notched a lead-off double in the fifth, but both efforts went for naught with outs immediately following them.

Sleepy Eye continues its stand in the Region 2C playoffs Sunday at home against the New Ulm Brewers. First pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Lamberton will instead travel to Leavenworth for a 7:30 p.m. game.
