‘Cruizin’ For Carson benefit set Sunday

August 2, 2013
By Fritz Busch - Staff Writer , The Journal

NEW ULM - More than 100 items will be available at a live and silent auction Sunday at Turner Hall, created for the betterment of an eight-year-old New Ulm boy with spastic cerebral palsy.

Carson Lewis, son of Mitch and Maria Lewis and grandson of Cindy and Brad Lewis, Al Boettger and Mary Conroy, was born with the condition that makes it difficult for muscle control and coordination, particularly in his legs.

After nine costly surgical operations, treatment and therapy, the fund-raiser was created to help the family buy a handicapped-adaptive van and make their home more handicapped-accessible.

Carson relies on a power wheelchair for mobility. A handicapped-adaptive vehicle would make it easier to him to take part in family, peer and community events, which is what he loves to do, according to Jean Geistfeld of the Cruizin' For Carson committee.

"Through it all, Carson always has a twinkle in his eye. He remains a happy, vibrant kid who brightens the life of everyone he meets," Geistfeld said. "He loves being around peers, community participation and more than anything, being a big brother to his most favorite people, (siblings) Brooklyn (5) and Rex (nine months)."

Live auction items include a Winchester 12-gauge shotgun; three day, four night turkey hunt; weekend in Orange Beach, Alabama; pheasant hunt for up to 10 people; guided carp shoot, a Pat McGill motivational speech; evening at Schell's Brewery including a private tour and Brewmaster's five-course gourmet dinner for eight; two-person tree stand; Right Hand Empire bow; wildlife prints; autographed Minnesota Vikings football; basketball signed by Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx players; and other sports items.
