The Minnesota Department of Transportation is getting ready to finalize its 20 year State Highway Investment Plan. It held its final meeting to accept public statements on Monday, and will accept written statements up to tomorrow.
Up to now, MnDOT seems intent on backing a portion of the Highway 14 four-lane expansion between Rochester and New Ulm, but not all. The only portion in the plan is the portion Gov. Mark Dayton has already backed. It does not include the two-lane portion between Nicollet and New Ulm, or the portion between Dodge Center and Owatonna.
If these portions of Highway 14 are not part of the MnDOT?20 year plan, chances are that funding for these projects will not materialize in MnDOT's budgets. This terribly unsafe, economically stunting stretch of highway will continue to be an inadequate two lane highway for a long, long time.
