Relay for Life

THUMBS UP: While most of us were sleeping last night, a large group of dedicated volunteers spent the night at the Brown County Fairgrounds, walking around the oval track by the grandstand for the 2013 Brown County Relay for Life.

The annual event is a fundraiser, a celebration, and a symbol of hope for those who are affected by cancer. And it is hard to find someone these days who hasn't had a family member, a friend, an acquaintance or co-worker who hasn't dealt with cancer.

Relay for Life teams set up displays and booths, creating a carnival-like atmosphere that lasts throughout the night. The main focus of the event are the thousands of luminaria, purchased by people, that are signed with the names of cancer victims and survivors. They glow throughout the night along the oval track, reminders to those who walk the track throughout the night of the good work they are doing.

We deeply appreciate their efforts.

BCHS Award

THUMBS UP: The Brown County Historical Society did a tremendous job last year, setting up its exhibit "Never Shall I Forget," commemorating the 150th anniversary of the US-Dakota War of 1862.

The society's efforts did not go unrecognized among it peers. This week the museum receive a 2013 Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), a national organization of local history groups. The display, which is still open at the museum, and the educational programming the society coordinated presented a balanced, thoughtful recognition of this difficult time in the state's history, and New Ulm's.

This is indeed a well-deserved honor.
