NEW ULM - There have not been many games when the New Ulm Brewers have been out-hit in a game this season.

Wednesday night, the Essig Bluejays out-hit the Brewers 12-6, but in the only statistic that counts, the Brewers came out on top.

New Ulm used two of its hits paired with two Bluejay errors in the bottom of the fifth to score three runs and went on to a 5-4 win over Essig in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

Chris Cariveau got the pitching win for the Brewers, now 18-2. He went seven innings and allowed three runs. Cory Ranweiler got the save for New Ulm.

Sam Hansen took the loss for Essig (10-11). He went 5 2/3 innings and was charged with five runs.

Wade French and Landon Rewitzer each had two hits with French belting a solo home run. Brady Ranweiler and French each drove in two runs.

Dusty Fleck led the Bluejays with four hits.

"I could not tell you the last time that we were out-hit in a ballgame," Brewers manager Al Flor said.

And the lack of hitting by the Brewers was matched by the lack of getting a key hit by the Bluejays.

Essig stranded 15 runners on base including leaving the bases loaded in the top of the ninth.

The Bluejays trailed New Ulm 5-3 going into the top of the ninth inning and facing Brewer closer Cory Ranweiler.

Dusty Fleck led off the inning with his fourth hit of the game - a double to center field. Terry Helget followed with an RBI single to left field to cut the lead to 5-4.

Ranweiler retired Larry Haala and Colton Petron before Nate Roeder legged out an infeld single. Eric Hauser reached first base on catcher's interference to load the bases.

But Ranweiler got Kyle Krzmarzick on strikes to end the game.

The Brewers, who received a forfeit from Redwood Falls for a game scheduled tonight in New Ulm, took a 1-0 lead onHansen and Essig in the bottom of the first. Aaron Pfaff was hit by a pitch and went to third on an errant Hansen pick-off throw. Cory Ranweiler's sacrifice fly plated Pfaff.

But the Bluejays were quick to tie the game in the top of the second. Fleck tripled and scored on a Larry Haala base hit.

The Brewers regained the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the second when French blasted a 2-0 Hansen offering over the fence in left field.

But Essig came back with two runs in the top of the third for a 3-2 lead on a Fleck RBI single and a hit batsman.

Hansen then set down the next six New Ulm batters in a row before the Brewers got to Hansen in the fifth.

Landon Rewitzer reached on an error by catcher Kyle Helget before Garrett Fischer was safe on an error by Fleck in right field. A fielder's choice preceeded a two run single from Brady Ranweiler. A French base hit added another run.

That lead held up until the ninth when an Essig rally fizzled.
