NEW ULM - New Ulm Medical Center officially opened it's newly expanded and remodeled birthing center Friday, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The $1 million project was supported by $200,000 in local donations.

The project, which began in the fall of 2012, added two new labor and delivery rooms, giving the hospital a total of six. The four existing rooms were also renovated.

Hospital President Toby Freier said the birthing center was the latest example of NUMC's effort to meet the increasing challenge of providing health care to people in the region. He cited the expansion of the surgical center, the expansion of the cancer treatment center with the creation of the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute Center, and the emergency room expansion in recent years as examples.

Patients have been telling the hospital for years they want more amenities, said Freier, "and we listened." The rooms are larger than before, giving more space for visiting family. New mothers can get massages, and whirlpool tubs in each room. The rooms can call the hospital food service for orders at any time, said Freier. There are pull-out sleeper sofas for husbands or support persons.

The redesigned area puts the nurses station closer to the nursery, increasing efficiency for staff and physicians.

New Ulm Medical Center delivers about 300 babies a year, said Freier, and it expects to deliver more in the future as it draws more patients from around the area.

Since it is impossible to hold an open house for the area, the hospital has created a four-minute video showcasing the new expansion. It can be viewed online at www.newulmmedicalcenter.com
