WACONIA - In a 35-over baseball game played on Sunday, the Searles Bullheads were shutout by the Waconia Islanders by a score of 6-0.
The Bullheads managed only three hits. Getting singles were Brad Mathiowetz in the first, Brian Sieve in the fifth, and Bruce Jacobs in the sixth. Even with four walks, two by John Giefer, the Bullheads never got a runner beyond second base. Meanwhile, Waconia scored two runs in the first and third innings, and added single runs in the second and fourth.
Waconia's starting pitcher, Kirk Vergin, pitched the first fourth innings and was credited with the win. Dave Haugland preserved the shutout by pitching the final three innings. Brant Drill went the distance for the Bullheads giving up six runs on 12 hits. Drill struck out three, walked two, and hit one batter.
The Bullheads (1-3) are off until Saturday when they travel to Loretto for a 3:30 p.m. game. Their next home game at Searles will be at 2 p.m. Sunday against Prior Lake.
