St. Paul’s student advances to national science fair

NEW ULM - Peter Spengler, grade six, from St. Paul's Lutheran Elementary School in New Ulm, earned a purple (first-place) ribbon at the Regional Science Fair for grades 3-6, at Minnesota State University, Saturday, April 27. At the special awards ceremony following the competition, he went on to earn a gold (first-place) medal in his scientific division (Engineering, Math and Computer Science); cash prizes; and a nomination to compete in Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars). Spengler's project, titled "Subs on the Move: Spin or Swim," involved making rubber band propelled water bottle submarines and testing how the fin shape and size affected the stability of the sub.
