NEW ULM - The winner of the 2013 New Ulm 5th Annual Big Tree Contest is an elm tree at 710 N. Franklin St. The tree measured more than 10 feet in circumference.
New Ulm resident Joshua Grau won the competition by finding the largest elm tree, netting him the $200 dollar prize. The prize is applied toward a purchase of a tree of his choice.
This year's category was elm trees.
The next biggest tree entry measured 9.7 feet.
The program is hosted by the New Ulm Tree Advisory Commission to help build awareness of the beauty and importance of trees. The New Ulm Park and Recreation Department worked in conjunction with the commission for the contest to help promote Arbor Day events.
