Minnesota Valley Funeral Home holds annual meeting

The 84th annual meeting of Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes & Cremation Services was held on March 26 at the New Ulm Civic Center. Nearly 500 members attended.

Accountant Ken Vonderharr presented the financial report to members. He informed them that the association had a very profitable 2012 and that profits will be paid back in dividends to the families served in 2012. More than 100 new memberships were issued during 2012, and more than $500,000 was invested in funeral pre-arrangements, according to a press release.

General Manager, Bruce Savoy presented information about the acquisition of the former Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm, its purchase price and details of the purchase. Savoy also pointed to the success of new memberships issued during January and February of 2013 and how many were former clientele of the Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm and Hanska.

More than $86,000 in dividends were paid over the past five months and $16,000 plus will be distributed in June, Savoy reported, bringing the dividends paid in eight months to more than $100,000.

Lorna Holmberg, nurse manager of the cancer center at New Ulm Medical Center and a member of its oncology department since 1997, was guest speaker. She presented information about NUMC and its affiliation with the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Director Tony Guggisberg was re-elected to the board for a three-year term. During the re-organization meeting, officers were elected. They are Bob Schabert, president; Dick Lieb, vice president; and Jim Flatau as secretary/treasurer.
