WINTHROP - Dennis Nelson, 73, of Winthrop died Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the V.A. Hospital in Minneapolis.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2013 at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Winthrop with Father Jeff Horejsi celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Gregory's Catholic Cemetery in Lafayette with Full Military Honors being conducted at the cemetery by the Winthrop Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9:00 10:00 a.m. Monday at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Winthrop. There will be a parish prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the church. Dennis is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Nelson of Winthrop; Daughter and son-in-law, DeAnn and Lynn Woods of Winthrop; sons and daughters-in-law, Denny and Susan Nelson of Darwin, Mike and Lisa Nelson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Steve and Mandy Nelson of Litchfield; grandchildren, Ashley Muchow, Dustin Nelson, Jessica (Justin) Keech, Rickie and Noah Nelson, Lucas, Jacob and Jenifer Woods, Shelby, Megan and Alex Nelson; great grandchildren, Reagan and Isaiah Muchow, Levi, Brody and Tory Nelson, and baby boy Keech; sister and brother-in-law, Emily Ann and Jerry Bertrand of Sleepy Eye; sisters-in-law, Barbara Nelson of New Ulm, Ramona "Mona" Nelson of Lafayette; and many nieces; and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ricky Nelson; and brothers, Luverne Nelson and Rodney Nelson.
Dennis Harlan Nelson was born on July 30, 1939 in Brighton Township, Nicollet County to Bernard and Delores (Krueger) Nelson. He graduated from New Ulm High School in 1957. Dennis served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam from 1957 1960. On January 14, 1959 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Saffert at the Alameda Naval Base in California. They have lived in Springfield, New Ulm, Brighton Township, Nicollet County and since 1993 in Winthrop. Dennis worked at Sibley Interiors his family owned business in Winthrop for twenty years and had laid carpet for thirty seven years. Dennis enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, the V.F.W. in Winthrop and was a past commander. He also had been the Mayor of Winthrop for two terms and participated with the Nicollet County Sheriff's Department.
