Sheldon Rieke to receive Human Rights Award

February 19, 2013
The Journal

NEW ULM - Sheldon Rieke of New Ulm has been named the recipient of this year's Human Rights Award by the New Ulm Human Rights Commission.

The award recognizes people, community organizations or businesses in the New Ulm area that have contributed significantly to the preservation and advancement of Human Rights.

Rieke's service to the community marks him as a particularly deserving recipient. His dedication to SPOTS (Students Performing On Tough Situations) best exemplified his contribution to the Human Rights principle of leading by example. In the SPOTS program students act out scenes they have created on subjects regarding youth welfare. They tackle issues from safety on the bus for first-graders to the more serious issues such as dating abuse or drinking for the older students.

One of the most important issues SPOTS addresses is bullying in all its various forms. Rieke teaches that bullying is something that harms everyone. Stopping this behavior is a sign of maturity.

A reception will be held for Rieke at the Lind House on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 4:30 p.m., with an award ceremony at 5 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
