Public input sought on creating profile for Dist. 88 superintendent

Meeting set for Jan. 29

NEW ULM - The public is invited to help create a profile of attributes that a new superintendent should possess to be successful in District 88, as part of an ongoing search for a new superintendent.

Superintendent Harold Remme is retiring at the end of this school year, and the School Board recently decided to use the South Central Service Cooperative Superintendent Search Program to facilitate the search for a replacement. The district is a member of the co-op, which provides the service free of charge to member districts. The search is directed by Ed Waltman, a retired Mankato superintendent.

"A very important component of the search process is to seek staff, student, parent, and community input into the creation of a profile of attributes that a new superintendent should possess to be successful in the New Ulm School District," the consultants announced in preliminary meetings and on the District 88 web site.

The public can provide such input by attending a community meeting with the consultants at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the School Board Room on second floor of the District Administrative Center.

If people cannot attend this meeting, they can complete an electronic questionnaire published on the district web site (www.newulm.k12.mn.us, click on the bottom left button).

The survey includes questions about the strengths of, and biggest challenges facing, the school district, what needs to be done to improve the academic achievement of students and the district's operation over the next few years, and what skills and abilities a new superintendent must possess.

The consultants will tabulate the results of the returned questionnaires and help the School Board create a superintendent profile.

The timeline for the superintendent search, also published on the web site, is as follows:

- Jan. 10 to Feb. 14: Board planning, engaging the community through group meetings, and creating a profile of attributes for the new superintendent

- Jan. 14 to March 1: Advertise, recruit, and accept applications

- March 2 to March 19: Screen candidates and complete the first round of interviews

- March 25 to March 27, 2013: Conduct final interviews and Board offer

- March 28 or April 11: Action on new superintendent contract
