NEW ULM - The Mankato Mosaic Theatre Company will present a holiday show at the Grand Kabaret on Saturday, Jan. 5 in New Ulm.

The show is an encore performance for the Grand Center for Arts and Culture after the group performed its annual show in Mankato in early December. The performance features four plays written by regional writers, a musical performance by area musician Jason Helder and a reading of related poems by Granite Falls poet Jennifer Brunick.

Greg Abbott, who wrote three of the program's plays, said the Mankato Mosaic Theater Company is focused around showcasing the local talents of Mankato and the surrounding region. The group has a lot of success in selling out shows that are performed in a bar or coffee shop.

According to Abbott, "Walking Track" focuses on two coworkers continually trying to keep their New Year's resolutions to walk around the St. Peter Community Center track to lose weight. He based the play around a coworker's and his own struggles to stay healthy when faced with the ever-present temptation of a Godfather's pizza buffet.

"50 Shades of Winter" features a couple trying to spice up their relationship in a sly mockery of "50 Shades of Grey" if it had been set in a Lake Wobegon-esque setting. Abbott explained that the skit is fully family friendly. The play is more of a comic skit that anybody could enjoy, but people familiar with the book would get just a few more joking allusions, said Abbott.

"Christmas Dinner" focuses on the struggles of a couple that is forced to eat out on Christmas due to accident burning their food. The couple races against the clock to get their two-year-old child fed before his impatience explodes into misbehavior.
