MANKATO - The 150th anniversary of the execution of 38 Dakota as a result of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 will be marked today with a dedication ceremony for a new monument in Mankato.
The new monument, which will be unveiled in Reconciliation Park, features names of 38 Dakota hanged etched in stone. The park is located at 100 South Riverfront Drive.
The dedication is among the last in this year's series of events in observance of the conflict of 1862. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.
The ceremony will also be the final stop for the annual Dakota 38 Plus 2 memorial ride The riders will end their 330-mile trek that started in the Lower Brule reservation in South Dakota several days ago.
