December 18, 2012
The Journal

NEW ULM - Reverend Lloyd D. Hahnke, 93, was called into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 14, 2012.

He was born to Henry and Agnes (nee Streich) Hahnke on October 27, 1919 in Buffalo and was made a child of God through Holy Baptism on November 16, 1919 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buffalo. Lloyd promised to be faithful to the Lord when he was confirmed on July 2, 1933 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Litchfield. After graduating from Litchfield Public High School, Lloyd attended Dr. Martin Luther College to begin preparing to enter the public ministry. After graduating from Northwestern College in Watertown, WI and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, WI, he received his first Call into the preaching ministry. He was ordained in Platteville, Colorado on January 27, 1946.

As a parish pastor, Lloyd served congregations in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Minnesota. More than twenty years of his ministry were spent teaching German, Latin and religion at Martin Luther Academy in New Ulm. He also served as Dean of Students at DMLC and MLA and was the Vice-President and Recruitment Director at MLA. Lloyd later served as associate pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

Reverend Hahnke was the Chairman of the first School Board for Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School and had the distinct honor of naming the school.

After retiring in 1984, Lloyd and his wife, Evelyn, moved to their lake home near Litchfield where they enjoyed fishing and spending time with their growing family. After being retired only one week, Lloyd received and accepted a semi-retirement Call to serve St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Darwin. He served for many years before retiring for a second time. The Godly leadership and example he provided as a Christian parent, teacher, and minister contributed to having many of his children and grandchildren study for the teaching or preaching ministry. This brought him much joy.

Lloyd will be missed by his loving wife, Evelyn (nee Pomerenke) Hahnke, whom he married on December 23, 1945 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in St. Paul. They were married for 66 years. Lloyd and Evie had five children: Donald (Shirleen) of Eau Claire, WI, Steven (Ruth) of Manitowoc, WI, David (Annette) of Fond du Lac, WI, Maribeth (Gary) Wong of Mankato, and Karilynn (Robert) Barthels of Mishicot, WI. They were also blessed with 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service of comfort and praise will be held at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm on Friday, December 21, at 2 p.m. Rev. Donald Sutton will officiate.

Visitation will be at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church on Friday beginning at 12:30 p.m.

A private interment will take place in the St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Tuition Assistance Funds at MN Valley Lutheran High School, Martin Luther College, or St. Paul's Lutheran School in New Ulm.

Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, North Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements. To leave an online condolence for his family or to sign the guestbook go to: www.mvfh.org.
