MADELIA - Madelia lost its conference opener to Granada-Huntley-East Chain in Thursday night boys basketball action.
Devin Ulmen led Madelia with 10 points to go along with his five rebounds on the night. Another top contributor was Derrick Van Hee, who had three assists for the Blackhawks.
Madelia (0-1, 0-3) will travel to Alden-Conger next Tuesday in another Valley Conference showdown.

WINTHROP - Sam Pendleton scored 26 points as Cedar Mountain/Comfrey defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in Tomahawk Conference boys basketball action Thursday.
Henry Pendleton and Zach Kerkhoff each scored 17 points for the Cougars.
Seth Schuette scored 20 points and Brett Rickheim scored 17 for the Thunderbirds.
