Sleepy Eye completes campground cabins

For rent March to October

SLEEPY EYE - City park and recreation employees Daryl Bergs and Steve Lingen took interest when Flandrau State Park in New Ulm added two camper cabins not long ago.

"We looked at them and thought, we can do that too," said Bergs. "We presented the idea to the city finance committee last spring, got approval and went to work."

Berg said he and Lingen considered steel siding for the cabins but preferred wooden log siding for the two 12-foot by 24-foot, two-room cabins with double and single-bunk beds and enclosed porches.

Sleepy Eye Park and Recreation Department employees Daryl Bergs and Steve Lingen recently completed building two cabins at Sportsmans Park on the north side of Sleepy Eye Lake. The two-room, 12-foot by 24-foot cabins will be available for rent at $50 a night, $65 on holidays, beginning in March 2013. One cabin sleeps six but is not handicap-accessible. The other cabin is handicap-accessible and sleeps five.

The cabins have electricity, wall air conditioners, heaters and double-pane windows but no running water. Renters could use nearby bathroom facilities at Sportsmans Park, on the north side of Sleepy Eye Lake.

The cabins will be offered for rent at $50 a night on non-holidays and $65 on holidays, from March through October, said Bergs.

Renters would supply their own bedding. Cabin cooking would be limited to small electrical items.

Grills, fire pits and picnic tables are located outside each cabin, as they are with each park campsite.
