Planning Commission to hold public hearing on commercial kennels

November 29, 2012
The Journal

NEW ULM - The New Ulm Planning Commission will meet at 4:30 p.m. today in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

The commission will hold a public hearing on the proposal to modify the New Ulm City Code regarding commercial dog kennels. The current City Code only allows licensed kennels in commercial or industrial zones.

The proposed ordinance would modify City Code to allow commercial kennels in the allowed zones only if they meet performance standards. The requirements in the ordinance require the kennel to be 1,000 feet, or 2 1/2 blocks, from a residentially zoning district with the exception of the R-A zone. It would also require the kennels to be insulated so the noise and odor could not be detected off premises. Finally, it would require retail sales of products related to household pets not exceed 25 percent of the gross floor area of the kennel's principal building.

The hearing was initiated by a request to build a kennel in an industrial zoned area of New Ulm.

The meeting will be open to the public.
