Are we ready for the Second Coming?

To the editor:

The concerns that were communicated during the election season compel me to trump them with even greater matters, such as Jesus Christ's Second Coming, the probability of cataclysmic changes of life on earth (the two might not be related), and the truth that there is Hope for the world.

Jesus said He would come again. He stated no one would know the day or the hour, but He did warn us to watch and note the signs of His second coming. He referred to the fig tree and alleged when the buds begin to form, summer is approaching. When the time of His return draws near, there would be wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes and famines. Substantiating the validity of Jesus, Lee Strobel, in The Case for Christ, documents that hundreds of people were eye witnesses of the living Jesus Christ after His death on the Cross. Christianity alone boasts its Founder's escape from a permanent earthly grave. Jesus left the earth when he ascended in His resurrected body to His Father in heaven. The angels told the disciples that Jesus would return to the earth in the same manner in which he left. His coming again might be imminent.

Regarding the likelihood of "impending future disruption," Richard Swenson, M.D., in his book, Hurtling Toward Oblivion, explains how and why progress is leading us toward an inevitable crisis and the end of human history as we know it. He states that while progress is mostly good, it is accompanied by the fallenness of our existence "that the world is a defective place." While Swenson's book is primarily statistical, it gets spiritual when he admonishes his Christian reader to display peace, service, joy, lowliness, meekness, humility, forgiveness, compassion, reconciliation, brokenness, kindness, gentleness, grace, patience, self-control, submission, mercy, forbearance, wisdom and unity. Swenson writes, "God's ways are vindicated in every social experiment ever conducted. His advice always turns out to be the healthy option. We have assurance that our biggest problem [sin] - larger than all our other problems added together and multiplied by infinity has been solved. We know forgiveness, we know grace, we know hope. We know love, we know truth, we know the Cross, and we know the Savior of the Cross. What a privilege to be picked to live today!" Great change is likely.

But no matter how bad things are or will be - there is hope. Pattie Mallette (Justin Bieber's mother) in Nowhere but Up, shares her story of how God answered when she cried out to Him following an attempted suicide. God's answer convinced her that He is real. Jesus Christ is the only sure refuge for man, and He will answer sincere seekers who search for the truth. We don't have to look far for signs that something is amiss. If you are not sure that your eternity is secure in the hand of the Father, call on His Son, Jesus. The only safe place is within the LORD's will, and His will is that we know His Son (John 6:40).
