Eagles look to improve

November 18, 2012

NEW ULM - "There's no where else to go but up."

That's how New Ulm High School junior forward Ellie Schneider said about the Eagles' 2011-12 season. The Eagles did not win a game last year.

"You don't forget (last year)," head coach Matt Dick said. "We step on the floor, and start playing."

Dick said that the team's first goal is to win a game, improve upon last year's record and be competitive by playing hard from the opening tip-off to the final buzzer. He said that they also want to be a better second-half ball club.

There are 22 players on this year's team and two of them are seniors. The seniors are Alex Welsh and Elizabeth Guggisberg. Dick said this is up from 19 on last year's roster.

While Dick doesn't define total success by the number of wins and losses, he does enjoy winning.

"I love winning. Winning is awesome," he said. "I love the game, and I enjoy teaching the game to high school students."

His dream season would be seeing the Eagles fighting for the South Central Conference Championship in February.

He sees Waseca and Fairmont as the two teams that will be fighting it out for the SCC championship.

In Section 2AAA, Dick sees Mankato East, Marshall and Hutchinson as the top teams to watch this season.

Dick encourages fans to come out and watch the team this season because they will play hard and fans will appreciate seeing an "underdog" playing hard every game.

Schneider echoed Dick's desire to do better than last year, saying, "We want to improve upon last season."

She enjoys being on the floor, helping the team and working together.

Schneider plans to attend college somewhere after graduation, and play collegiate sports. She said she would play only one sport. Her choices would be between basketball or softball. As an Eagle, (in addition to basketball) she has also played volleyball and softball.

"It's a new year, new people, and there's nothing you can do (about last year), (you) just have to forget about it and work hard," Schneider said about the upcoming season.

Dick said Eagles fans should also pay attention to sophomore point guard Briana Sieve, Schneider and senior guard Alex Welsh.

Dan Reinhart and one other coach to be determined will be assisting Dick on the bench this season.

The Eagles' season opener will be Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Mankato East in a non-conference game.
