Several close races in area

BROWN COUNTY - A number of Brown County races were hotly contested Tuesday night.

Robert "Tubby" Herman edged Dawn Hagert for Cobden City Council by a vote of nine to eight.

Susan Evers and John Schmitt were elected to the Comfrey City Council with 177 and 172 votes respectively. There were seven write-ins.

Gary Schichtenberg was elected Hanska Mayor with 126 votes. Dondi Strassburg received 66 votes. There were seven write-ins. Larry Stoesz and Richard Willis were elected to the Hanska City Council with 136 and 104 votes respectively. Deanna Zea received 87 votes, David Konakowitz 55 votes and there were two write-ins.

In Springfield, Mayor/Councilor-at-large Mark Brown was re-elected with 632 votes. Clete Utz received 226 votes and Gary Widmer 140 votes. There were five write-ins.

In other municipal races, Winthrop Mayor David B. Trebelhorn was re-elected with 431 votes. Challenger Dale Malheim had 211 votes. There were four write-ins. Peter F. Machaeik and Jessica Wiborg were elected to the Winthrop City Council with 395 and 355 votes respectively. Edmund Pelletier received 294 votes. There were 20 write-ins.

In Lafayette, Darren Saffert received 159 votes for mayor. Tom Sandberg got 80 votes. There were four write-ins. Deb Webster and John Paulson got 169 and 126 votes for two city council seats. Sandra Altmann got 85 votes. There were 44 write-ins.

In Gibbon, Doug Stark and Richard Gurska received 228 and 157 votes for two city council seats. There were 206 write-ins. Jeff Gatton was re-elected mayor with 219 votes. There were 135 write-ins.

In Fairfax, Cindy D. Fahey and Lois A. Gilles were re-elected to the city council with 379 and 287 votes respectively. Larry Dallman received 231 votes. There were nine write-ins.

In Franklin, Ronald Degner was elected mayor with 118 votes. Timothy Joehnck had 96 votes. There were five write-ins. Curt Scharfencamp and William Wiese received 185 and 143 votes respectively. Corey Gruendemann got 71 votes. There were 85 write-ins.

In Courtland, Al Poehler received 338 votes for mayor. There were 19 write-ins. Tom Foley and Ralph Bents got 269 and 197 votes for city council seats. Sandy Kollmann got 178 votes. There were five write-ins.

Top vote-getters for the four Springfield School District 85 seats were Megan Quesenberry 1190, R. Scott Jones 1,034, and Mandy Rasset and Doug Robertson each with 712 votes. Following were Kurt Bast 696 and Douglas Cook 581. There were seven write-ins.

On the Comfrey school board, Pete Samuelson got 505 votes, Loren Schumacher 477 and Jim Meyer 471 votes for three seats. There were 20 write-ins. Andrea Toll received 519 votes for a special election seat. There were eight write-ins.

Top vote-getters for four Cedar Mountain school board seats were Angie Jemmings 901, Clay Kleinschmidt 831, Tim Sandgren 776 and Joseph Sullivan 677 votes. Richard Tietz received 539 votes. There were 62 write-ins.

For the Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop school board, Phil Klenk got 1,771 votes, Greg Wickenhauser 1,693 and Paul Weilke 1,677 for three seats. There were 82 write-ins.

For the Red Rock Central school board at-large seat, Ron Kelsey received 928 votes. John R. Hansen had 722 votes. There were 10 write-ins.

Chad Stavnes had 497 votes for the District 1 seat. There were five write-ins. Kip Rasmussen got 307 District 2 votes. Norm Johnson had 252 votes. There were two write-ins. Amy Bierl had 524 District 3 votes. There were 13 write-ins.
